D.C. in the snow and a little bit of history
June 6, 2011
Incase the summer weather was getting to hot for you - this should cool you down. My hubby took these shots one snowy day. We don't prefer to travel downtown because of all the chaos (and unannounced street closures)...and traffic and crowds - but sometimes, on the right day - it is just perfect.
Well, I started to trace the rumor of there being thirteen hands on the Iwo Jimo memorial, and I found a story about a man that met the son of one of the six brave men raising the American flag. And he knew all about the other men. The bronze statue depicts a photograph that was taken of six men raising the flag at the top of Mount Surabachi during WWII.
Harlon Block - is the man that you see putting the flag in the ground. He was an all-state football player. All the seniors on his high school team enlisted in the Marine Corps. Harlon died at the age of 21. Most boys in Iwo Jima were 17, 18 and 19 years old.
Rene Gagnon - at the time the photo was taken, Rene kept a photograph of his girlfriend in his helmet. He kept it there because he was scared. He was 18.
Sergeant Mike Strank - 24 years old and was the hero to many of the boys.
Ira Hayes - a Pima Indian from Arizona. One of 27 that walked off Iwo Jima alive.
Franklin Sousley - a fun-loving hillbilly boy. Died at the age of 19.
John Bradly - the dad of the man telling about the rest of the boys presented in the statue. He lived until 1994. He was a medic and he took no interviews about this statue. He did not feel he was a hero. He said the hero's were the ones that were left behind.
I share this - not because I like little pieces of history...interesting history...history to make it personal (I think the school systems could do SO MUCH MORE with all these little known facts). I share this because I've lived here all my life and have driven by this statue more times than I can remember. I hope that this monument is more than just a big old piece of metal with a flag sticking out to you as it is to me now. Now its personal.
And the rumor - There are only 12 hands in the memorial. The existence of a 13th hand that was added by the sculptor to symbolize all other Marines or the hand of God, is not true.

above is one of my favorites...
I always thought this one looked like ski tracks (above).

Baby beach pictures.

You know those parents that dress their kids up in fancy hats and uncomfortable dresses just to take a family picture? Yes. I'm one of the those parents. Auggie was in the WORST mood this time...not wanting to pose with the rest of the family - found some comfort in the sand before we headed home to Virginia. It reminded me of one of those old time photos...

R.I.P. "Ressie"
June 3, 2011
Pets in the country aren't quite the pampered indoor house ones that we have around here in my home town. Their cats and dogs tend to run or spend most of their time outdoors (which is probably why most of ours are plump and lazy). This one pet belonged to one of my husband's relatives. Auggie (who has never spent much time with dogs) grew pretty attached while we were there visiting. The dog sadly passed away before she got back up to see it (but she thinks it is running free somewhere on the other side of the mountain). R.I.P. Ressie, you were a good friend for our visit.

Beautiful flowers.

As much as I am complaining about missing the beach so far this summer, I do have to say that there are wonderful photo opportunities that will be surrounding me on my vacation in North Carolina with my two beautiful girls and hubby. And hopefully if my plan works out, a brand new lens to play with. HOWEVER, the downfall is, there will be no internet, no cell service, no texting way up in those mountains - so forgive me for falling behind again and if you can't reach me - you now know why...

Peterson's Ice Cream Depot. Clifton, VA
May 31, 2011
The best ice cream place in the world!!! Or, at least in my little corner of it. First off, Clifton is a great place to visit - such character, such personality, such history. A few years ago, this little ice cream spot popped up right in the middle of the little historical town. And it is YUMMY!

WALDROUP - catching up...again
May 19, 2011
Playing catch up again ~ this daily blogging is HARD when there are a million other things that I have to do! I will try and be more loyal. Things got extremely busy at the end of the year. I was the unofficial class mom for my daughter's first grade class and we put together a fabulous photo book for the teacher's end of year gift. There were party plans to make for that, Girl Scouts wrapping up, Church school ending and ballet. Wondering how I'm going to manage when both the girls have all these activities to balance. Here are some canvas letter's I made for my sister-in-law. They came out AWESOME...very fun project.
